Outfit Post #5

Cream tights... make me feel like a dainty porcelain doll. Yes, how weird I am. But it's true... these guys gals have a vibe of prettyful cu-uteness (a legitimate term) that goes really well with pastels and florals and all bright things really. So far nobody has ever came up to me wondering if that was my natural skin colour.. but maybe they were afraid to ask?

INSPIRED BY: Thelma & Louise

In the excellent documentary about US Vogue, The September Issue, Grace Coddington emphasised the importance of absorbing inspiration from all around you. To paraphrase, always keep your eyes open, never fall asleep in the car, etc. I completely agree with Grace (the Genius), and I try to do the same. Travel, architecture, shapes and colours are all sources of sartorial inspiration. Of course, we can't forget the power of streetstyle in today's world. The streetstyle snaps and features in magazines like Elle and Company are the pages I look forward to most. And I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Lookbook.nu is one of the easiest and most exciting ways of getting inspired from real people on a minute-ly basis (if you like refreshing the New page all day!?)

Thelma & Louise, directed by Ridley Scott in 1991

FILMS! I want to document how I've been inspired by various flicks, and I think I'll start with Thelma & Louise. I first saw this film in June and it captivated me. The story, the quality of the acting and the setting were stellar to say the least. Indeed, the largely country style soundtrack impressed me and I've never been a fan of that genre of music at all! I guess there's a lot of F buzzwords that come to mind with this film (NO NOT THAT WORD!)

Friendship...feminism...fear...fantasy...fun...fleeing... FASHION! Yes, fashion. I doubt it was the intention of director Ridley Scott but somehow the rough edges and the simplicity of the denim and cut-off t-shirts screamed a FIERCE (another f word) attitude. Personally, I'm still hunting for the right full length Levi jeans to match with a hastily snipped t-shirt (these women didn't do bum-skimming hotpants)
Take a look at these stills from the film. It won Best Original Screenplay at the 1992 Academy Awards and was nominated for other major Oscars. The clothing reveals the changing personalities of the two friends.

Here is Thelma (Geena Davis) dressed in a cutesy floral skirt with her sleeves pulled over her hands in an awkward adolescent manner.

Yet here, within a couple of days Thelma's new attitude rises from the ashes of her dead end marriage as she wields a gun in brash double denim. It's tough, aggressive and sexy- a powerful statement.

Some might complain that Susan Sarandon's beauty doesn't fit with Louise's character but I think that she holds an understated yet somehow striking appearance. In this still, she's chilled and happy, casually dressed in a simple button down shirt that seems much more glamorous paired with a red lip, cigarette and Margarita.

Like Thelma, Louise also experiences change. The recent series of events have been difficult for her to handle. She's burned by the desert heat and lipstick and jewellery are notably absent. All that remains of Louise, is who she really is, raw and pared back.

Throw on a pair of well-worn dusty Levi jeans and rip off the sleeves of your comfiest t-shirt for instant empowerment!

Outfit Post #4

Let the sludgefest of AW12 begin! The draw of khaki, camo and all things military is by no means a new trend but its about to be a key feature of all winter wardrobes. McQ was feeling it at LFW and Sarah Burton's influence usually translates to guaranteed high-street homages! Topshop Unique has also drawn on this and there's lots of Russian military vibes going on that filter down into their general line. The 90s colour schemes are also similar to the army palette.  I haven't reinvented the stylewheel by pairing this grunge-y green with black but when its so easy to wear, how could you say no? Pile on the gold bling for the decorated patriotic feeling (without having to enlist!)

We all love a good band tee.. am I right!? Black/dark t-shirts always look striking and the flashes of colour, text and logos make a real statement in an outfit. But rightly or wrongly, some wearers of band t-shirts have little or no knowledge of the band or artist they happen to have emblazoned on their chest. I love the design and colours used in the Guns N' Roses t-shirts but to be honest, I've never had any interest in their music, I can't even think of one of their songs. Because of this, I wouldn't feel right wearing a t-shirt bearing their name. Sure what if someone walked up to me and was all, "How do you feel about the riff in the 3rd verse of the hidden track on the third EP before the band's breakout album?" I'd be in trouble then! To save any rolled eyes and mutterings of "tryhard" and "Wannabe", I'll stick to what I know. Good ol' Stefani Germanotta (Lady Gaga) can pout happily away as this admiring longtime fan wears her mug with meaning!

RIP to the camera I used to own.. its days are over

I've developed a skill for breaking cameras.. and my Nikon Coolpix is the latest victim. The lens is a quivering mess and I can't see a thing on the screen. I'm no photography expert but I think, subconsciously, I wanted to kill my camera. It was a replacement for a good quality Samsung that I unwittingly whacked a few weeks before... Well what else could I expect after dropping it for the 73rd time! Anyway I'm hoping to find a new camera that can fulfil all my Lookbook/blogging needs. Someday when my fingers are butter-free, I may even purchase one of those cool big massive fashion-people cameras! And I'll NEVER drop it!

I didn't want to post this on Lookbook.. it's just too blurry but here it is blogside anyway!

Outfit Post #2

This is an outfit I've been thinking about putting together for a while now but it felt a little bit too dark and wintery for these long hot summery days in Ireland (!) But the other day seemed the perfect occasion.. vicious torrential rain and gusts of wind! Everything I'm wearing is vintage, the jumper is from Shotsy Vintage in Temple Bar and I layered over a dress i acquired from my grandma last year.

I felt like I was channelling a housewife in the late 50s, early 60s- hell, there's even a bit of an 80s vibe in there too because I think thats the jumper's era! Either way, you can't deny that it's a full on vintage vibe! Wearing head-to-toe vintage makes you feel like somebody else entirely.. I felt compelled to pour tea from a delicate china pot to into matching cups, the perfect hostess who never leaves the house without a painted lip and husband by her side.

Shoes: Primpfrock Vintage, ASOS Marketplace

Outfit Post #1

Heyheyhey! -OK, I need to work on a better greeting! =/

This is my first outfit post! I'm wearing some trusty American Apparel disco pants and a Levi denim jacket (pretty original huh?) with my second NEWGEN10 t-shirt, this one is by Peter Pilotto. Topshop celebrated 10 years of supporting up and coming designers earlier this year by producing t-shirts by the likes of Mary Katrantzou, Holly Fulton, Erdem and Meadham Kirchoff to name but a few! I thought it was great because it gave mere mortals like myself a chance to buy something with a designer label without the hefty bill.

The first t-shirt I got around the time of the collection launch, was the Jonathan Saunders t-shirt. I loved the futuristic colourful print on the black background. Clued-up clotheshorses will recognise hints Jonathan's SS12 collection peaking out through the Transformers-like graphics. Similarly, the Peter Pilotto t-shirt shows the label's prints that dominated their SS12 collection, not to mention the red carpet.

Is this thing on!?

Hello! My name is Sionan and I have decided to join the rest of the universe by starting a fashion blog. I'm Irish born and bred, and have a penchant for all things wearable! Society has begun to gradually exclude me on the basis that all I talk about is clothes!

I figured, in order to cling to the few friends I have left, I need to find an outlet for all this talk of hues and hemlines! I'm not the first and DEFINITELY not the last but as my good friend Drake says- I saw him live and I swear, he actually winked at me!- YOLO. (you only live once)

With the amount of blogs I read, surely I must have picked up something? Time will tell! Anyway, here I go... *dips toe in sea of fashion and blogging*
